As for the Canadian relatives, none that I know of. And my family left Europe as recently as the early 1900s.
I have a noted preference towards Brit spelling, much to the chagrin of my mother and my English professors, and I took five years of French, so, while I'm not fluent, I know just enough to get me in trouble...although it does help with music.
As for creative spellings, I assure you I've seen most of them. I went to a mostly minority high school, which was fine, considering it was a college prep magnet, so odd names were the norm. It wasn't until I got to university and actually dealt with people who couldn't write. Horrific. I had to do everything to keep from hurting them severely. *nods*
