2. I'll respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You should update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You should include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.
If money weren't an object, what kind of jewelry would you want to make?
If I knew how to set cabochons, I would love to go into coronet making. Yes, coronets aren't much needed outside of Hollywood, the stage, and SCA, but there's something seriously awesome about them. That, and metalwork is just nifty. Granted, I'd have to learn it, but I don't think it'd be that hard once I got the hang of it.
What's your favorite instrument to play? To listen?
Since I can play five instruments, and of those two passably well, I'd probably have to go flute or piano. Sure, I can't play piano worth a damn, but it's comforting, really. To listen to, however, I love French horn, cello, and the human voice. Countertenors are awesome. Mandolins are also great to listen to.
What do you think of marriage?
It works for some, and others it doesn't. I do want to get married, once we can afford it. I do think that all people should have the opportunity to get married to the other human being that they love. I do think that the federal system of marriage is flawed, and should be stricken, but at the same point, I understand keeping it in the status quo.
Do you want to keep living in Missouri, or would you like to move somewhere else?
As much as I love being close to home, there is an entire big wide world out there, and I want to be a global citizen. The problem is in that the cost of living is getting higher and higher, and while I'd love to live on either coast, it's cheaper in many ways to live in the Midwest.
Do you like renaissance festivals? What's the difference between them and SCA events?
Hooboy. That's a loaded question.
I like ren fairs and festivals provided I'm going with friends who understand my point of view on them. I'm not inherantly snarky, but there are just some things within fairs that are more of a pop culture view of history rather than a correct form of history. For instance: turkey is not something you'd see in medieval or Renaissance Europe. Why? Because the turkey is a strictly North American bird. Yes, they're cheap to produce and to feed to people, but honestly, it's just not accurate.
Additionally, I do think that what started off as a reemergence of historical fun has now become a glorified outdoor mall for weird and wonderful things, surrounded by a decent ambience.
As for the difference: most ren fairs and festivals are for-profit organisations. The SCA is not. Ren fairs/festivals look more at getting people through the gates, whereas the SCA is all about education, and a hands-on one at that. Additionally the time period foci are even different between the groups. The SCA is skewed more towards medieval into the Renaissance, and with most ren fairs, it's well, supposed to be Renaissance.
Since most Ren fairs pick willy-nilly from history's pages (I recall the KCRF having Robin Hood and Henry VIII at the same time in the fair...plus OMG!fairies), I usually have large issues with going just on a historical, educational ground. However, I'll go if I'm with the right group of people, mostly because it should be shared with friends, and not snarked at.
Does that make sense?
