Well, I gave myself the nickname of Elf. That never caught on. So did being called Ketchup by a friend because of my propensity to wear shirts from the Heinz factory. Thanks for the shirt, Mom.

Online, I'm Zephyr, but when it comes to matters of my offline life, this too hasn't caught on.

If we're talking ridiculously cute pet names, Anti sometimes calls me Rachel-bear. I'm reasonably okay with this, but it doesn't really work with general public usage.

I'm not going to count my SCA name, as well, it doesn't count. Nope. Small group of people, relatively speaking, call me Constantia. Not everyone else does.

So, people like to shorten my first name (Rachel) to Rach. I cannot tell you how much this annoys my ruddy socks off. It's just lazy! Everyone who refers (or seemingly everyone) to me by my first name usually calls me Rach, from my mother to my coworkers, and even Anti, occasionally. I've tried to tell people, especially those at work, that I dislike being called Rach, and if they could, to just refer to me by my given name until a suitable nickname can be found.

So far, no one is successful.

I never shorten anyones name unless they use that form themselves. I used to hate going by Jen even. That changed online because it was just easier to TYPE, so I got used to it.

But don't EVER EVER EVER call me Jenny.

I have a deep seething dislike of being called "Rach" too...makes my hackles rise!!

The sad thing is, EVERYONE and their mother calls me it, and I look like such a bitch when I respond. That's always headache-worthy.
