Well, I'm getting better. My voice is starting to go, but I can now keep food down. It's a trade-off I'll take. Meanwhile, it gives me time to work on the icon project for Queen's Prize. My current shopping list comes to $60, which just proves that I can do this inexpensively. A lot of the paints will get used for other things (other icons, mayhaps), and it's not like I'll use all of the gold leafing. At least, I hope I don't.
Meanwhile, I've been dealing with some correspondence with a younger member (at least, I'm hoping she is) of an SCA group in one of my online communities on the correctness of corseting within period. I'm trying not to become all garb Gestapo, but it seriously irks me when I see corsets worn on the outside of garb. It's underwear! Then again, said person is a belly dancing pirate. The two don't make sense to me, but eh.
Trying to be as gentle as possible, I wrote this:
"That's the problem...most corsets aren't meant for voluptuous women (which I never got, honestly...it's supposed to keep things strapped in and pulled up). That, and corsets are undergarments.
"I think too many people get the erroneous idea that corsets are overgarments from both burlesque (nothing wrong with that) or Ren fairs, both of which the SCA is not. Even in highly out-of-period Victorian England, seeing a nip of a corset was crazily scandalous. It's like running outside to your front yard in your nuddy-pants today to a crowd of your neighbours in the middle of winter. It's simply not period, nor appropriate.
"I think it's fine if you want to wear them, but I'd rather not see them on the outside. As it stands now, corsetry wasn't something we saw until the 1600s, when they were introduced as stays. If you're like my friend Constance, who's all English Ren, it works. I've never seen her corset, just the effects of the garment.
"Call me a Garb Nazi if you want (even though half my garb's cotton, machine sewn, and definitely out of period for my persona), but that's just my opinion."
She wrote this:
"I am a Bellydancig Pirate if that makes any sence. and i where a period shirt under my corset. so nothing is really poping out any where. plus i wear a bodice sometimes."
Yes, I'm snarking. I'm sorry. Seriously, though, did I somehow stutter in my answer? Corsets. Are. Underwear. Oi. More importantly, pirates belly dance? Really? In period? The hell? I didn't think I was being so Garb Gestapo here. Hrm.
Anyway, I'm going to go to bed. Maybe. Sleep is good.

Answer: Indeed, it makes about as much 'sence' as wearing your underwear over your outerwear.
