It's about the neighbourhood.
Where do you live?
I don't mean what city, state or country. Who cares about the geographical location. I wanna know about your neighborhood. Has Mike Tyson been arrested around the corner? Did Princess Di die in the tunnel three blocks away? Who are your neighbors? That sort of thing.

I've only lived in my area for about a year, and with being antisocial, it's kind of hard....but here goes.
My neighbourhood dates back to the twenties, at least. It's an older part of Kansas City (Missouri, people. Missouri.), and the common architecture's wonderful. The houses look small, but they really aren't. Ours is a three-bedroom (converted sleeping porch). All of the houses (on our block, at least), have that similar gingerbread house style.
My next door neighbour is a widower, and still has all of his wife's doll and miniature collections. His roses in the summer perfume the air like nothing else. He's showing signs of Alzheimer's. He's got three cats.
We're really fortunate that our landlord (who is like a grandfather of ours), lives on the same block as us. My stepdad hangs out with him quite a bit, it seems. He lost a few fingers on his left hand (I think) when he was in WWII. It's either that, or a farming incident when he was a kid.
Next door from our landlord are the resident Buddhist family. It was interesting one summer to find that Hare Krishnas were blessing the house. (yes, this occured in Midwestern America) They're getting ready to move to Kansas, due to better schooling. I believe they have a cat and a dog.
Next to them, a woman with I believe Alzheimer's. It's interesting, actually. My parents do take care of the older residents on our block. She has at least two cats.
Next to her is a family that knows a lot of the church family. It's bizarre, actually. They do live in HUD housing, and most everyone can tell when it's inspection day. Half the house is on the curb. Grandma lives with them, and they have six kids, the youngest four, I think. They have three cats, and two dogs. Possibly a few ferrets.
That's just our half of the block. I've accounted for at least seven cats, three dogs, and maybe a ferret or two.
My other next door neighbours are a newly married couple. We don't see much of them. Unfortunately, their kitchen's windows open up to show my bedroom, so I have to keep the blinds down most of the time. Needless to say, I don't see much of them.

Date: 2005-03-09 04:01 am (UTC)the neighbors directly across the street just moved there. prior to that there was a retired marine who lived there. he had just lost his wife 6 months prior to our moving in. when he was there he and mac would swap war stories. he kept his wives things in the house until he got sick and moved in with his son. the new family is a black couple and their dad and 2 young daughters. they also have an older daughter and son who doesn't live with them. the daughter has a daughter of her own. the girls are in trouble and diva's classes so that made them instant friends. the neighbors to the left of them is a retired airforce couple. he makes and flys model planes. they have a old dog which mac and i helped to search for her when she got out of the gate one day.
the family on the left of them is a mexican family which has 3 generations living there. the grandfather died this past winter. they have the grandmother, mother, and grown children living there. no young children. right behind us is the jewel of our neighborhood as far as i am concerned. a german woman who my kids call grandma. she is just like family to us. we watch over her, she watches over us and the kids. she is an angel. i will miss her most when we move. wish i could take her with us. she has a cat.
