Sweet Mother of God, I found pre-made egg tempera!

Sure, it's not making my paint by hand, but it's a cheaper alternative, and it gives me a chance to work with material I've never worked with before!

Hee!

Dammit.

This means I -have- to enter Queen's Prize now.

Cathus, I hate you. Not really. But it sounds good.

So, who wants to make my birthday and get me the deluxe set? :P I kid. Sort of.

Even cheaper...if you have a set of gouache, instead of thinning with water, mix the heavily pigmented gouache with egg yolk.

Also, I've not done a ton of research into icons, but I'm guessing that sanding the wood *really smooth* first and using a 'primer' in the form of gesso will go a long way to making the process easier on you...paint colors will pop more, and you don't have to worry about wood grain showing through.

Good luck!!

I have to use a warm rabbit-skin glue gesso to prime it. They're complicated, but deliberate. I've been wanting to get into making icons for a while now (I blame going to Episcopal General Convention two years ago) as an expression of faith, so this is something that on an SCA level would be cool to get into.

Sadly, encaustic painting's really expensive to get into, but, hopefully, I'll learn that eventually.

Yes, I'm a art geek. :P
