Consider the following. You're having a conversation about music. You're fond of classical and someone recommends a loud wailing rap song to you. The resulting discourse goes like this:
There's a list out there about the Five Geek Social Fallacies that pops up every now and again. But this is another one that really bothers me and that I encounter a great deal. It's probably due to the fact that I don't drink, and when I attempt to convince someone that I don't care for the taste of alcohol, I end up in a "But it's awesome! You couldn't possibly not like it!" conversational loop.
I'm guilty of this as well sometimes and I understand where it comes from. We get excited about something. Something is exciting to us and makes us happy and we want to share it with our friends. When said friends don't express the same level of excitement, we sometimes can't grasp why.
This is just a reminder to myself and to others... Just because you're into something doesn't mean everyone else is. If someone says it isn't their thing don't keep shoving it in their faces. You might end up with the exact opposite result you intended.
---
Reminder to self: not everyone wants to see the latest gewgaw you just made. Nothing personal; they're just not interested.

"Dude! The song is full of awesome! You really need to download it!"
"I'm not into rap music though."
"But the song is amazing! Here, let me play it for you right now, it's on my iPod."
*five minutes later*
"Okay, I listened to it and I didn't like it."
"Why not? It's so awesome! Here, let me play it again..."

Date: 2009-12-09 07:56 am (UTC)So yeah. All that to say, anyone bugging you about that needs to step off. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Full stop. I know that wasn't really the majority of your post, but that's sort of a pet peeve of mine. :|
