I sent out my support emails for the Young Adults Festival yesterday. I have one person (so far) responding, my friend Amberine, who is lovely, blithe, and bonny, and she's praying for me. I'm stinking excited for her, too, as she's going to Bolivia this summer (like, in two weeks!).
Here's the letter I sent out. Some of it'll look VERY familiar, I know.
Hi everyone!
A few weeks ago, my pastor came up to me after church, wanting to ask something. Being the church newsletter editor, I thought it was about the newsletter.
WRONG! He told me that he selected five college-aged people to go to the Young Adult Festival at the Episcopal General Convention in Columbus, Ohio, as representatives for the Diocese of Western Missouri, and that I was one of them. How exciting! The General Convention will be held from June 12 through the 22nd, though our travel time means we have to leave the Sunday before so that we can get there in time for registration.
He then also told me that because I was the "writer" of the group, that I was to write an article for the Western Missouri Spirit (the diocesan newspaper) about the activities, as this is the first year for the YAF.
It looks like I really am supposed to go, no?
But, here's where I need your help.
Most of my expenses will have to be either out-of-pocket, as my church (a very small country church - we have 14 members!) can't provide too much (it's a $700 trip, at least!), though my pastor has put aside $100 of the discretionary money for the trip, which helps. I have taken unemployment for the summer to both take this trip, and because at a college during the summer, there's not much work, so my unemployment goes to paying the bills.
Will you commit to prayer or supporting this trip? Each individual member needs $700 at least to cover their end of the trip. If you would like to help send me and others to Festival, you may do so by making a gift to Missioner's Discretionary Fund, PO Box 675, Maryville, MO 64468. Please write "Festival Scholarship" in the memo line.
Please respond back as soon as possible!
If you commit to prayer, please pray for these things:
Money for personal reasons
Breakfast is the only meal covered, and while my church has covered my
registration ($280 for both the festival and the convention, which
include lodging), I wouldn't have money for lunch or dinner, so please, pray about where I would get said money. I don't make much, and most of it gets eaten up by bills (yay...I guess).
Attention span
Since you all know a me just a tad, you know that I cannot stay on
topic for long. I'm horrible at it! This is why I'm asking for the simple act of patience and focus when in extended sessions (and from what I've counted, there are at least six).
Ministry discernment
Things like this simply don't just happen. Things like this happen for
a reason. Please pray for discernment and guidance for me and others as
we take a look at possible ministry outputs for the new college ministry in the diocese, for which my pastor is head of.
Health
I know it seems so minor, but honestly, having joint issues is bad
enough, but once in another climate, plus travel just makes things all sorts of odd and weird. Since I'm still not on meds for this, please pray for health and general well-being.
Travelling mercies
Of course. I mean, from what I know, there'll be at least four other
people my age and older travelling...by van, over seven hundred and fifty miles and eleven hours. I know we'll get on each others' nerves. But I just ask for grace and prayer that the van doesn't explode or something equally tragic.
I think that's it, and I realise it's looming closer, but it's not here
yet, but it's still something to think about. Please forward to all of your friends, because, darnit, the Body of Christ, despite its
dysfunctionality sometimes, is supposed to pray for the individual parts.
Hope to hear from you soon!
So yes.
I also got my packet in the mail. It's getting closer! EEEee! And now, I'm getting super-nervous. I'm not a "cradle Episcopalian." I'm still learning things about the Episcopal Church and her traditions. I don't even own a Book of Common Prayer!
So yes. Freaking out a little, here.
Breathe, Z. Breathe.
