Yes, technically, I've posted this already. But, after this weekend and a conversation that [livejournal.com profile] newcastleepl, [livejournal.com profile] ermenrich, and I had, some things got fleshed out.

"Let's say that today, in Court, someone begged a Boon to elevate you to any one of the three Peerage orders...what would you want for your Peerage ceremony?

Who would you have speak for you? Present the regalia? What about the vigil? Ceremony style?"

Okay. I'm not going to plan too much more of what I'd want, mostly because I am too easily changeable. But, after talking with [livejournal.com profile] newcastleepl and [livejournal.com profile] ermenrich about who we would have to speak for us, if, by some weird fluke we had been announced for the Peerage today, who would we have speak for us. Of course, this is totally up for change. I don't expect to get a Peerage for a while, nor do I look for the recognition. I want to learn more, have fun, love lots, and look good while I do it.

So, here goes.

Chivalry: Baron Sir Duncan Fearmach, HE Sir Erich Hlodowechssun fon Hocheichhallu or Conde Fernando Rodriguez de Falcon
Laurel: (One of my hard ones!) Mistress Fionnuala, HE Sir Erich Hlodowechssun fon Hocheichhallu or Mistress Tsire.
Pelican: HE Elasait or Cts Lyriel. All righty. Considering I live on the other side of the state, there's a ton of B3R folks here. Goodness.
Royal Peer: Cts Elspeth of Stonehaven, Cts Isabeau, or HG Hywela.
Populace: (The other hard one for me!) Ewen Macleary, Ermenrich von Duisburg, Cathus the Curious, Rhodri ap Hywel or HE Mirabel Wynne.

...I know too many people. This could be a problem.

It's a start. And I know I won't ever get to a point where I have everything figured out. I know me too well. And seriously, I know this is a long way off. I've learned very quickly that expecting stuff, even if you feel you deserve it, just leads to broken-heartedness and eventually hard-heartedness down the line, and I don't want that from something I love too much.

In the East we get fewer choices -- no populace and the royal peer is always a Lady of the Rose.

I think having Erich and Elasait speak would be cool. You could make Duncan speak as a Pel, though, because he begged his own boon. ;)

My daughter and I have had this discussion, and she finally said, "Surprise me."

It's just a lot of musing and a lot of thinking. And it's one of those things that just gets me thinking about what the heck I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

:)

You look at your list of people, and that reminds you what you are doing and why?

Oh, to be like some of those folks.

Well, I learn from example, largely. (I also learn hands-on, but that's another story.) I watch people to figure out what to do or who to follow or even how to behave (doesn't -always- stick, but it's a good start).

Wrong Duncan...Duncan Bruce of Logan (usually called Logan) and known on LJ as duncan_prime, is the one who "begged his own boon". Duncan Fearmach MacLeod is the husband of now-Mistress Gillian Warrender, a former squire of Fernando's, and he and his lady were until recently baron and baroness of Three Rivers.

Yes, it is hard to keep the Duncans straight. :)

Yeah, pretty much. I swear, we need flashcards sometimes to keep our Duncans and Rorys (and all weird variations on such) to keep them straight, too.

...hmmm...I smell an evil plan here. :D

Maybe another Duncan tournament?

Here in the East, we are infested with Angii.

We have had that infestation from time to time as well. With the same plural. :)

Dammit.

The only one I really know is 11 of 9.

At least I can keep the Ruahdhris straight.

Please tell the story about Logan begging his own boon. I haven't heard this yet. [This is what I get for being out of the loop.]

He's got it posted in his journal, actually. (In fact, my big Valor post has it within the cuts.)

I've become enough of a cantankerous old fuddy-duddy that I'd be tempted to ask for the Shortest Calontir Peerage Ceremony on Record: TRM call me in, the herald reads the scroll, the herald hands the scroll to TRM who hand it to me, and I process out. I hate frippery when it's directed at me, and, besides, why cause a court to be longer when there's a party to be had?

The member of the populace thing threw me, as I can't remember this being done back home. I kinda like it though.

I do, too. Really adds a nice bit of how this person got to this spot. It really does take a village.

One of the most important lessons that I was ever taught on this came from Master Kaz, while we were working in his shop.
What he said to me was this:
"You can't "expect" things. Your job, as someone who aspires to the peerage, is to be the best peer you can be BEFORE you are given that honor. To know, within your heart of hearts, that even if you are never handed the dubis, that you actions, your bearing, and your manner is of peer-like quality. No one is ever MADE a peer. The Crown, in the best of circumstances, simply recognizes the peer that is before them.
Pray that when you receive the honor, it is a question not of MAKING you a peer, but honoring that which you have already achieved."

For me, it shifted the focus from what I wanted, to what I needed to become. And I think it helps when you get the dubis, not to have it go to your head. The peers I have seen that have the most difficulty adjusting are those that never figured out the medallion isn't a magic wand that grants you anything, other than attention.
:-)

Uh-huh. And who can't figure out why the respect they thought they would command once they got the medallion to hang around their neck, didn't happen.

Y'know, that may explain why I had Peer Fear when I was a fringie. I was always afraid of some costuming Laurel coming after me telling me that I was doing it wrong, which, as we all know, is no way to get respect or accolades from others.

I am so glad I got over that to realise there's more to the SCA than that.
